Don’t throw away your old jeans! Use the hems and seams to create an adorable DIY handmade denim scrap Christmas tree!
Ok, I’m going to make a confession that a lot of women do not want anyone else to know.
The denim of my jeans wears out between my thighs pretty quickly because they rub together when I walk. *hanging head in shame*
I know, I know. There are just some things in the world that we can’t help. Not to be picky, but they just don’t use the same quality in denim as they used to. I don’t know about you, but I’ve noticed that the fabric on the jeans I buy nowadays is thinner and way stretchier than I remember it being back in the day.
This thin cheap denim just stinks if I’m attempting to do any work on the homestead. It tears easily and wears out too quickly.
I hate wasting anything that could possibly serve another purpose. So I have been saving all of our old jeans to cut up and make a denim throw and maybe some throw pillows for our sofa. I will definitely make sure to post the tutorials for both of those once I get them finished up.
But as I started cutting up the squares for the throw, I realized that I had no use for the hems or seams. I had to brainstorm an idea of how to use these instead of just tossing them into the burn pile.
Making the tree was pretty simple. The hardest part of the entire process was making sure that I didn’t burn my fingers using my glue gun.
I purchased a craft form cone to create the tree.
Then I just started gluing the hems and seams around the form, starting at the bottom. The trick is to make sure to start with the longer pieces so that one long piece wraps completely around the form.
Make sure all of your “seams” from gluing are lined up on one side so that you can turn the tree and no one will see the overlap.
How to Make Your Own DIY Handmade Denim Scrap Christmas Tree
- Cut and gather seams and hems from old jeans.
- Carefully glue to craft form cone using a hot glue gun.
- Butt or overlap each strip to ensure none of the craft form shows through.
- Continue from the bottom to the top until entire form is covered.
- Cut two pieces of denim into star shapes.
- Glue two stars together with a toothpick in the center, sticking out from the bottom by about half.
- Allow to dry, then insert a toothpick into the top of craft form.
- Set up your upcycled denim Christmas tree in your desired location.
These also make great gifts for those people who seem to already have everything.
I actually made this, fell in love with it, but then ended up giving it to my mother-in-law. Even though it looked absolutely adorable on the mantel beside my Reversible Fall/Winter Mantel Sign. She is a Christmas junkie but has so much. Giving handmade, one of a kind items seems to be a good option for people like her. (Besides, handmade with love beats store-bought any day, in my opinion.)
Make sure to comment with your own upcycled trees! I love to see what you have made.
And do not hesitate to ask me anything! I’m here to help you make sure your tree comes out perfectly!!
