Using old newspaper or other uncoated paper (like your kids’ homework or school papers that you would otherwise just toss in the trash) to make DIY newspaper seed starting pots will save you money on gardening supplies this year.
Gardening on a Budget
Over the years, I’ve come to realize that I spend quite enough money getting the garden ready, what with the price of seeds, potting soil, fertilizer, etc. I have to be
cheap frugal when it comes to how I actually start seeds and then harden them off.
I get newspapers each and every week (hey, I need those coupons!) so I tend to have them laying around. Not only do they work wonders in making these seed starting pots, but I use them instead of landscaping fabric to keep weeds at bay, and also shredded up as mulch or an amendment to my compost pile. Most of us have some kind of paper laying around that we can use for an array of different things instead of just putting it into the trash bin.
Get started on your DIY Newspaper Seed Starting Pots
I started with the smaller, almost magazine size newspaper, but the larger size will work also.
The goal is to get between a 10″ and 12″ square piece of newspaper to work with. I simply folded up the bottom corner to the side to form a triangle, and then ripped off the excess. I am really not picky as these just go into the ground to decompose anyhow, so who cares if the edges are perfect?
I then fold the opposite corners together so I have a sort of grid marking the center point. I then fold each corner into the center to make a smaller square.
Once the corners are all folded in, then you are going to want to fold the sides in (approximately into thirds) and crease these really well.
Repeat in the other direction/with the other sides.
To clarify, we are folding into thirds.
At this point, when you open it all up, you will have a really cool grid pattern on your newspaper.
Lay it out flat and unfolded again. Fold in the little dog ears on each side. Find the center-most square in the grid. At the left corner closest to you, use the diagonal fold to pinch it up and together into a corner. Repeat with the other side. Fold “tail” nearest you into the box and tuck. Repeat with the other side.
And there is your DIY Newspaper Seed Starting Pot!
I also have a video for you of the last folding part, just so that you can see better what I am trying to explain.
Please let me know if you have any questions, I will do my best to answer them.
There you have it!
A great, inexpensive way to start all of your seeds while reusing those old newspapers you have laying around.
