Want to scent your home using more natural ingredients? Use essential oils in your own reed diffusers!
Once you have the sweet scent and aromatherapy benefits of botanicals wafting through your home if you are anything like me you will NEVER consider purchasing another store-bought plug-in or air freshener product again. There are very good reasons to make your own reed diffusers and use more natural ways to give your home the scent signature that you want without using commercial products.
For example, many name brand fragrance products use the known human carcinogen formaldehyde, and can also contain phthalates- hazardous chemicals known to cause hormonal abnormalities, birth defects, and reproductive problems. These big businesses are under no regulatory authority to keep them from claiming that they are “natural”, even when they are NOT.
Removing bad smells from your home with truly natural fresheners couldn’t be easier- or more beneficial. Nature offers a wide array of great-smelling options that can neutralize odors, while at the same time helping to soothe your mind or boost your mood. Instead of fake, potentially harmful fragrances, opt for safer homemade products instead- like a homemade reed diffuser.
Diffusing Essential Oils
I personally use essential oils to add lovely and aromatherapy benefits to my home. While I do not use an electric diffuser while I am away, I can still return home from work with the benefits of essential oils to lift my mood.
Essential oils are concentrated botanical oils that retain properties of the plants from which they are extracted. Many of them, such as eucalyptus, lavender, and rosemary, are antimicrobial and antibacterial, which makes them great for freshening up your home. In addition to removing bacteria and microbes, tea tree essential oil is an antifungal and antiviral.
One easy way to infuse your home with the scent of essential oils is to make a reed diffuser (instructions follow). Pick one (or more) essential oils to incorporate aromatherapy into your all-natural air freshener.
DIY Reed Diffuser
*Ideally your skewers will be twice as tall as the glass bottle you choose.*
Pour the oil into the glass container, and add 5 to 10 drops of the essential oil of your choice. Stir to combine.
Place the bamboo skewers in the glass bottle. About once a day, reverse the reeds, putting the dry ends in the oil and the oil-soaked ends in the air.
