I get asked all the time what exactly freezer cooking is. Simply put, it’s preparing meals ahead of time in order to save time during hectic dinner times.
We’ve all done it.
We are at the grocery store, wanting to start making more meals from scratch in order to remove some of the yucky processed foods that are advertised so prolifically. But then we enter the freezer aisle. We see the pre-made casseroles and meals that can just be tossed into the oven and baked. The problem with convenience is that it’s typically not the healthiest option.
Let me get on my soapbox for a minute here…
I’m not saying that things are not getting better in our options for convenience foods. I have definitely been watching labels start containing less chemical ingredients and more real ones. Honestly, though, I don’t trust those who are in control of our food supply. I used to actively speak out against Monsanto. But now Monsanto has been purchased by Bayer. There is just something innately untrustworthy to me that a chemical conglomerate owns our food supply.
As our site title says, I’m a hippy to the core. I hate Big Business and Big Pharma. In no way am I saying you have to agree with me. I love hearing what others have to say about my little “paranoia” about this topic. I’m all for capitalism, but I also feel that making money should be somehow regulated to have some moral and ethical standards.
Freezer Cooking is Healthier
By making your own foods at home, starting simply by just doubling a recipe that you already know and love, you can begin your freezer cooking journey.
By making it yourself, you know exactly what is in your food. You can without a doubt control your food allergies, diet and other concerns you may have about the foods you are feeding your family. I love knowing that I can use freezer cooking to preserve healthy, even homegrown, foods for longer and with easier preparation times. For example, I use homegrown kale in my Zuppa Toscana soup. I love that I control every aspect of what I’m serving my family.
Once you start doing this, I almost guarantee you will become addicted and want to do even more. You’ll purchase more things in bulk to get better prices, lowering your food budget. You will also see a ridiculous amount of time saved by not having to worry about how long dinner will take. (Not to mention trying to figure it out and giving in to take out instead!)
